A klasszikus Dakar útvonalon zajló hajsza 12 szakaszból épül fel, 5 Marokkón, 6 Mauritánián és 1 Szenegálon keresztül, a cél pedig a Dakar melletti Rózsaszín tónál lesz január 14-én. December 30-án Monaco varázslatos környezetében, a Formula-1 híres paddockjának is helyet adó területen folyt az Africa Eco Race rajtceremóniája. Jean-Louis Schlesser a verseny főszervezője adta meg a rajtjelet a Varga Racing Team párosának, Varga Imrének és Toma József Csimpinek, akik már negyedik alkalommal térnek vissza a futamra, idén egy Toyota Hilux Overdrive-val.
A hajón töltött szilveszter után a mezőny január 2-án kikötött Nadorban, 200 kilométernyi összekötő szakaszt követően pedig kezdetét vette a valódi hajsza. A Varga Racing Team párosa az első mérési pontnál még az élen autózott, 174 km megtételével később pedig kategória ötödikként ért célba Boudnib-ban.
„Túl vagyunk az első szakaszon, amelyben volt egy kis kaland is. Nem egészen úgy jöttek a jelek, ahogyan kellett volna, talán éppen azért, mert túl gyorsak voltunk, szóval volt valami kavarodás, de hamar megtaláltuk a helyes utat. Az első ellenőrzőpontnál az élen álltunk, de aztán visszafogtuk magunkat, mert az volt a tervünk, hogy nyugodt tempóban jövünk végig. Tudjuk jól, hogy egy ilyen hosszú verseny elején csak bukni lehet, nyerni nem, s volt is néhány versenytárs, akik ráfizettek a sietségre. Gyors és kanyargós pálya volt, nagy sziklákkal, de megoldottuk és készülünk a folytatásra” – mondta a napi szakasz céljában Varga Imre.
A második napot magabiztosan kezdte a 200-as rajtszámú magyar páros, a Boudnib és Mhamid közötti 383 km hosszú szakaszon. A homoktengeren való átjutás és a navigátori teljesítmény után felbátorodva folytatták a futamot. A nagy tempójú részen azonban eltaláltak egy fűvel takart sziklát, melynek hatására a Toyota bal első futóműve kiszakadt.
„Nagy nehézségek árán sikerült mozgásba hoznunk az autót, így döcögve elindultunk kifelé a szakaszról, hogy aszfalton haladhassunk tovább a tábor felé. A szervizcsapatunk már vár bennünket, elméletileg minden tartalékalkatrész rendelkezésre áll és nagyon bízunk benne, hogy holnap folytatni tudjuk a versenyt. Biztosan jókora időbüntetés vár ránk a szakasz félbeszakítása miatt, de még nagyon sok van hátra, így versenyben kell maradnunk” – mondta Varga Imre.
A hiba ellenére, azonban töretlen a lendület a párosban és még nagyobb eltökéltséggel folytatják a versenyt: „A folytatásban megpróbáljuk a kínálkozó lehetőségek kihasználásával visszahozni azt, amit most elveszítettünk, ugyanis tapasztalatból tudjuk, hogy ezen a versenyen ez lehetséges. Ott akarunk lenni a Rózsaszín tónál, soha nem adjuk fel!”.
Egész éjszaka keményen dolgozott a szervízcsapat és hajnalra sikeresen helyrehozta a Toyota Hilux Overdrive sérüléseit, így Varga Imre és Toma József Csimpi ma ismét folytathatja a száguldást az Africa Eco Race kihívásokkal teli terepén. 463 km szelektív szakasz várja a versenyzőket, varázslatos panorámával, sziklás-köves területtel majd egy nagyjából 40 km-es dűnesorral. A szakasz az algériai határ közelében zárul egy tempós, navigáció szempontjából bonyolult, technikás résszel.

The classic Dakar route consists of 12 stages, passing through 5 in Morocco, 6 in Mauritania, and 1 in Senegal, with the finish line near Dakar at the Pink Lake on January 14. On December 30, in the enchanting surroundings of Monaco and within the famous paddock of Formula 1, the starting ceremony of the Africa Eco Race took place. Jean-Louis Schlesser, the main organizer of the race, gave the starting signal to the Varga Racing Team duo, Imre Varga and József Csimpi Toma, who are returning to the race for the fourth time, this year with a Toyota Hilux Overdrive.
After celebrating New Year’s Eve on the boat, the field docked in Nador on January 2, and after a 200-kilometer liaison stage, the real race began. The Varga Racing Team duo led at the first measurement point but finished fifth in category after completing 174 km in Boudnib.
“We’ve completed the first stage, which had a bit of adventure. The signals didn’t come quite as they should, perhaps because we were too fast, so there was some confusion, but we quickly found the right path. We were in the lead at the first checkpoint, but then we held back because our plan was to go through at a calm pace. We know well that in such a long race, you can only lose, not win, and some competitors paid the price for rushing. It was a fast and winding track with large rocks, but we managed it, and we’re ready for the continuation,” said Imre Varga at the end of the daily section.
The Hungarian pair started the second day confidently on the 383 km long stage between Boudnib and Mhamid. After crossing the sea of sand and a strong navigation performance, they continued the race with renewed confidence. However, on the high-speed section, they hit a rock covered with grass, causing the left front suspension of the Toyota to break.
“With great difficulty, we managed to get the car moving, so we limped out of the stage to continue on asphalt towards the camp. Our service team is already waiting for us, theoretically, all spare parts are available, and we are very hopeful that we can continue the race tomorrow. We will certainly face a significant time penalty due to the interruption of the stage, but there is still a lot ahead, so we have to stay in the race,” said Imre Varga.
Despite the error, the momentum is unbroken in the duo, and they continue the race with even greater determination: “In the continuation, we will try to recover what we lost by taking advantage of the opportunities offered because we know from experience that this is possible in this race. We want to be at the Pink Lake; we never give up!”
The service team worked hard throughout the night, and by dawn, they successfully repaired the damage to the Toyota Hilux Overdrive, allowing Imre Varga and József Csimpi Toma to continue speeding through the challenging terrain of the Africa Eco Race. A 463 km selective section awaits the competitors, featuring a magical panorama, rocky terrain, and a roughly 40 km dune stretch. The stage concludes near the Algerian border with a fast, navigationally complex, technical section.
