A végső visszaszámlálás elkezdődött: a HunGarian Baja mezőnye csütörtökön már elkezdi a kötelező papírmunkát Várpalotán, ahol pénteken a kvalifikációs szakasszal és a Thury-vár előtti hivatalos rajtceremóniával elkezdődik a verseny. Az autós mezőny az FIA Baja Európa-kupában, a motoros mezőny a FIM Baja világkupában méreti meg magát – és persze a viadal része a hazai országos bajnokságnak is.
A pénteki bemelegítés után szombaton két hosszú (140 kilométeres), vasárnap két rövidebb (66.79 km) szakasz vár a mezőnyre – először a motorosok rajtolnak, majd pedig az autós mezőny.
„Óriási hőségre számítunk, de a partnereink nagyon sokat segítettek a pályák előkészítésében és az utómunkálatokban, illetve a szakaszok végén hideg vízzel várjuk a versenyzőket – mondta Garamvölgyi Zoltán, a verseny főszervezője. – Először a motoros mezőny rajtol, óriási hullámokra, rengeteg ugratóra, kavicsos, köves, murvás nyomvonalra számíthatnak a versenyzők a lőtéren, ahol vannak nagyon tempós és nagyon technikás részek is. Lesznek ismerős helyszínek természetesen, de a nyomvonal összefűzés szempontjából immár tizenkilencedik alkalommal is új.”
Ami a mezőnyt illeti, 22 ország 93 indulója adta le a nevezését az idei HunGarian Bajára, az autósoknál késhegyre menő Mini–Toyota párharc várható, míg a motorosoknál itt lesznek a világkupa élmezőnyéből jó néhányan, úgyhogy ott is látványos küzdelemre van kilátás.
„Meleg lesz, nagy por, és emberpróbáló, hosszú szakaszok, ami talán könnyebbség, hogy az idén a motorosok rajtolnak elsőként a pályákon – mondta a motoros versenyigazgató, Falics János. – A 140 kilométeres szelektív szakasz egyedülálló Közép-, illetve Kelet-Európában, és újdonság, hogy a neutralizációs szakaszt, amelyen a motorosoknak lehetőségük lesz tankolni, az idéntől a GPS szabályozza. Ez több országban működött, mi is kipróbáljuk. Ez lesz a világkupa idei ötödik futama, úgyhogy élesedik a küzdelem.”
A motorosoknál három hölgyversenyzőt (Joanna Modrewska, Mirjam Pol, Margot Llobera) láthatunk, ketten (Kristina Vankova, Nelly Caisova) a quad kategóriában méretik meg magukat. A férfi mezőnyben itt lesz a bajnokságban második helyen álló Kondrad Dabrowski, a veterán kategóriában éllovas Kurt Burroughs, és még jó néhány nagyon gyors versenyző. A magyar színeket Hodola Richárd képviseli.
„A világkupa mezőnye nagyon kemény, ezt megtapasztaltam a spanyol futamon, úgyhogy ott a középmezőnyben szeretnék végezni, míg a magyar értékelésben azért a legjobb négy közé pályázom – mondta Hodola. – A lőteret nagyon szeretem, a mai világban nagyon nehéz ilyen versenypályákat találni, hosszúak, emberpróbálóak.”
Az autós Európa-kupa mezőnyében itt lesz az éllovas Joao Ferreira, az őt üldözők közül pedig Pedro Manuel Dias Da Silva, vagy éppen Santiago Navarro, úgyhogy nagy küzdelemre van kilátás, amelybe beleszólhat a verseny korábbi győztese, Miroslav Zapletal ugyanúgy, mint a toyotás Vanagas Benediktas.
„Tradicionális pályákon zajlik majd a küzdelem, amely a gumikezelés szempontjából hatalmas kihívást jelent majd – mondta az autós versenyigazgató, Faluvégi Péter. – Visszatért a szárazság, úgyhogy elég nagy porra kell számítani, a versenyzőknek javaslom, hogy a nyomok helyett az itinerre hagyatkozzanak.”
A mezőnyben ott lesz (immár sokadik alkalommal) Lónyai Pál, aki nyilván szeretne a lehető legjobb helyen végezni új navigátorával, Szőke Nikolettel, akivel Spanyolországban már remekül tudtak együttműködni.
„Imádjuk a lőteret, bár tavaly orra estünk ott és összetörtük a kocsit, az idén nyilván megpróbálunk jobban vigyázni rá – mondta Lónyai. – Jó erős mezőny gyűlt össze, úgyhogy remek csatákra van kilátás, amelyekből mi próbálunk a lehető legjobb helyen kikeveredni, hiszen itthon különösen fontos számunkra a jó eredmény.”
Ami a nézőket illeti: érdemes lesz ellátogatni a Várpalotán tartandó látványos rajtceremóniára, amely pénteken este 20 órakor kezdődik, és a város fölötti nézői pontra, amely a Szápár irányába vezető főúttól balra eső terület – itt a pénteki kvalifikációtól az utolsó vasárnapi szakaszig minden alkalommal elhalad a mezőny, váltakozó irányokban. Várpalotán, a főtéren egyébként a rajt- és célceremónián kívül érdekesség, hogy lesz egy óriás kivetítő, amelyen követni lehet a verseny alakulását, és a Sport TV is naponta kétórás összefoglalót ad a versenyről.
The final countdown has begun: the HunGarian Baja competitors will start the obligatory paperwork on Thursday in Várpalota, where the race will start on Friday with the qualification stage and the official starting ceremony in front of the Thury Castle. The cars will compete in the FIA Baja European Cup, the motorbikes in the FIM Baja World Cup – and of course, the event is part of the national championship.
After the warm-up on Friday, the field will have two long stages (140 kilometres) on Saturday and two shorter stages (66.79 km) on Sunday – the motorbikes will start first followed by the cars.
“Huge heat is expected, but our partners have helped us a lot with the preparation of the stages and the post-race preparations, and we will be waiting for the riders with cold water at the end of the stages,” said Zoltán Garamvölgyi, chief organiser of the race. The motorbikes will start first, and the spectators can expect huge waves, lots of jumps, stony and gravel parts at the shooting range, where there are fast and technical sections as well. There will be familiar venues, of course, but the trail is new again for the nineteenth time, in terms of the way how we put it together.”
Speaking of the field, 93 riders from 22 countries have entered this year’s HunGarian Baja, in the cars category fierce rivalry is expected between Mini and Toyota, while in the motorbikes category a spectacular battle is predicted with the participation of several top riders in the World Cup.
“It’s going to be hot, dusty with long and challenging stages, although the fact, that this year the riders will be the first to start the race, might make it a bit easier,” said János Falics, race director. The 140-kilometre selective stage is unique in Central and Eastern Europe, and it is new, that the neutralisation stage, where riders will be able to refuel, is controlled by GPS. It worked well in several countries and we will try it out, too. This will be the fifth round of the World Cup this year, so the fight is heating up.”
The motorbike category includes three women (Joanna Modrewska, Mirjam Pol, Margot Llobera), while two (Kristina Vankova, Nelly Caisova) women will compete in the quad category. Among the men we can see Kondrad Dabrowski, runner-up in the championship, Kurt Burroughs, the veteran category leader, and a number of very fast riders. Hungary will be represented by Richard Hodola.
“The World Cup is very tough, I gained some experiences in Spain, so I am trying to finish in the middle of the field, while in the Hungarian classification my plan is getting into the top four,” said Hodola.
In the European Cup for Cross Country Bajas we will welcome the leader Joao Ferreira, with Pedro Manuel Dias Da Silva and Santiago Navarro in hot pursuit, and former winner Miroslav Zapletal and Toyota’s Vanagas Benediktas may also have some words.
“The race will take place on traditional stages, which will be a huge challenge in terms of tyre management,” said Péter Faluvégi, race director. “The dry weather is back, so we can expect a lot of dust. I advise the drivers to rely on the road book instead of the tracks.”
The field will include (for the umpteenth time) Pál Lónyai, who will obviously do everything to finish in the best possible position with his new co-driver Nikolett Szőke, with whom the partnership worked excellently in Spain.
“We love the shooting range, even though we crashed and smashed the car there last year, we will obviously try to take better care of it this year,” said Lónyai. “We have a strong field, so we are expecting a fierce battle, and we will try to get the best of it, because here at home a good result is particularly important for us.”
As for the spectators, we warmly recommend them to visit the spectacular starting ceremony in Várpalota, which begins at 8pm on Friday evening, and the spectators’ point above the town, an area to the left of the main road leading to Szápár – where the peloton will pass in alternating directions from Friday qualifying to the final stage on Sunday. In addition to the start and finish ceremonies at the main square of Várpalota, there will be a giant screen, too, to follow the race and Sport TV will also be broadcasting a two-hour daily summary of the race.
